Under-stairs storage

Plan under-stairs storage using pull-outs, hinged doors or shelves. Review the slope, usable depth and service access before measuring for manufacture. Use this guide to review the design with your site engineer before approving manufacture.

Map the changing height and depth

The space below a staircase varies along its length. Record each section’s available height and depth, then allocate contents accordingly. Low sections may suit drawers, while higher sections can take shelves or hanging storage. Keep valves and electrical panels accessible rather than concealing them behind fixed joinery.

Compare the design options

Use these options to discuss the configuration that fits the room and its intended use. Review dimensions and details against the actual material and hardware selected in the drawing.

Details to send before quotation

Include clear site photos and any available drawings, then clarify the points below. This makes the quotation scope easier to review and helps identify changes before production approval.

  • Measure slope points and distances along the front.
  • Record the aisle available in front of pull-outs.
  • Photograph services and connections within the space.
  • Agree fixing limits at the staircase with the site engineer.

Installation and handover checks

Operate units through their full travel and inspect rear access. Check reveals along the slope and confirm that joinery avoids service conflicts and unsuitable fixing locations.

Common questions

Can the entire space be filled with storage?

Review clear dimensions, services and fixing first. Some areas may need maintenance space or access panels, which should remain in the drawing.
