Name the construction
Ask what forms the cabinet body, doors, back, shelves and supports. Record the board type and grade, thickness, edge treatment and connection details. MDF and particleboard are broad material families; suitability depends on the actual grade, design and manufacturer specification.
Name the visible surface
Veneer is a wood surface layer applied over a substrate. A natural-looking finish may also be a decorative laminate or other surface product. Record what is actually specified, where it will be used and how the edges and joints will be finished.
Check the environment
Solid wood exchanges moisture with its surroundings, which affects dimensional movement. Indoor storage, exposed entrance doors and outdoor pergolas need different reviews. A protective finish does not remove the need to consider exposure, detailing and care.
Approve a sample
Review the agreed surface and colour in the project lighting. Natural grain can vary between pieces; state the intended grain direction and acceptable variation. A sample should be linked to the quoted material and finish system rather than only a colour name.
Keep the specification with the quotation
Ask for the material schedule alongside the drawings. If an alternative is proposed, compare its specification and approve it before manufacture. The most useful choice is the one that matches the intended use and budget with clear construction and maintenance details.
