Coordinate equipment before enclosing it
Set out the washing machine and dryer using their installation instructions, including ventilation, door travel and hose routes. Stacking equipment requires a manufacturer-approved arrangement; an ordinary furniture shelf is not a substitute for the correct appliance support system.
Compare the design options
Use these options to discuss the configuration that fits the room and its intended use. Review dimensions and details against the actual material and hardware selected in the drawing.
Laundry room cabinets — decision worksheet

| Option | When to consider it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Side-by-side appliances | A room allowing a worktop above equipment. | Required clearances, hoses and individual connections. |
| Stacked appliances | Reduced floor footprint with compatible equipment. | Stacking kit, installation instructions and servicing. |
| Separate storage beside appliances | Laundry supplies and sorting baskets. | Shelves kept clear of ventilation and valves. |
Details to send before quotation
Include clear site photos and any available drawings, then clarify the points below. This makes the quotation scope easier to review and helps identify changes before production approval.
- Provide appliance models and their installation manuals.
- Locate drainage, valves, sockets and the access route.
- Show how equipment can be removed for service or replacement.
- List cleaning supplies, baskets and storage dimensions.
Installation and handover checks
Have equipment tested by its installer. Check door travel, uncompressed hoses and maintenance access, then inspect worktop and shelf stability independently of appliance vibration.
| Item | What to clarify |
|---|---|
| Project file | Location, floor, site photos and dimensioned drawings with a revision date. |
| Quotation scope | Identify manufacture, delivery, lifting, installation and work requiring another contractor. |
| Approval | Agree the finish sample, production drawing and item schedule; record changes to price or timing. |
Common questions
Can a washing machine be concealed behind a wooden door?
Review the appliance instructions, ventilation, heat, opening movement and maintenance access before deciding. Appearance alone is not sufficient to specify an enclosure.
