Choose the island’s job first
A storage island has different requirements from one carrying a sink or hob. Establish its purpose before setting dimensions and seating. Services inside an island need early coordination with plumbing, electrical and ventilation work; their inclusion should be explicit in the quotation.
Compare the design options
Use these options to discuss the configuration that fits the room and its intended use. Review dimensions and details against the actual material and hardware selected in the drawing.

| Option | When to consider it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Freestanding island | Space allowing movement around the unit. | Circulation on every side and opposing cabinet openings. |

| Island with seating | Preparation or dining beside storage. | Knee space, supported worktop overhang and chair movement. |
Details to send before quotation
Include clear site photos and any available drawings, then clarify the points below. This makes the quotation scope easier to review and helps identify changes before production approval.
- Size the island after drawing the cabinet runs and appliances.
- State the number of seats and which sides need drawers or doors.
- Specify the worktop and any sink or appliance cut-outs.
- Identify power and service connections and the responsible contractor.
Installation and handover checks
Inspect stability and worktop support, then test seating with storage open. Have services checked by the relevant contractor and retain access to connections for maintenance.
| Item | What to clarify |
|---|---|
| Project file | Location, floor, site photos and dimensioned drawings with a revision date. |
| Quotation scope | Identify manufacture, delivery, lifting, installation and work requiring another contractor. |
| Approval | Agree the finish sample, production drawing and item schedule; record changes to price or timing. |
Common questions
Are the worktop and appliances included with the island?
Their inclusion is agreed in the quotation. Separate cabinetry, worktop, appliances and service connections so supply responsibilities are clear.
