Distinguish a handrail from a barrier
A wall handrail provides a grip along movement. A balustrade also forms a barrier at an edge. Specify the intended system and its connections to stairs and floors, then have geometry, loads and openings reviewed by the responsible engineer. A reference image does not define a safe assembly.
Compare the design options
Use these options to discuss the configuration that fits the room and its intended use. Review dimensions and details against the actual material and hardware selected in the drawing.

| Option | When to consider it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Wall handrail | A continuous grip beside the stair. | Brackets, ends and usable grip. |
| Post-supported balustrade | A barrier requiring defined supports and connections. | Posts, fixing and project-specific opening requirements. |
| Timber rail with other materials | A system combining metal, glass or other components. | Connection compatibility and component responsibilities. |
Details to send before quotation
Include clear site photos and any available drawings, then clarify the points below. This makes the quotation scope easier to review and helps identify changes before production approval.
- Provide the stair, landing and open-edge layout.
- Specify materials and bracket or post positions.
- Obtain engineer review of dimensions, loads and fixing.
- Declare weather exposure for any exterior components.
Installation and handover checks
Have fixing, joints and terminations inspected by the specialist. Check continuous usable grip, smooth edges and unobstructed movement, retaining assembly documents and maintenance instructions.
| Item | What to clarify |
|---|---|
| Project file | Location, floor, site photos and dimensioned drawings with a revision date. |
| Quotation scope | Identify manufacture, delivery, lifting, installation and work requiring another contractor. |
| Approval | Agree the finish sample, production drawing and item schedule; record changes to price or timing. |
Common questions
Can the rail height be chosen from appearance alone?
No. Safety geometry, openings and loads need project-engineer review. Coordinate the desired appearance with those requirements rather than using it as a substitute.
